Play with air rifle causes eye injury to boy

India, MUMBAI: Qusai Indonesiawala, a class IX student from Pune, suffered a terrible injury in the eye on Friday while playing with an air rifle that his father had bought 15 years back.

Qusai was alone at home on Friday afternoon when his friend came to play with him. Both the boys started playing with the air rifle that had always hung in the hall. Little did the boys know that the game would end with a metal bullet in Qusai's right eye; the pellet penetrated all the eye muscles and got stuck in the bone of the eye socket.
"My friend was just trying to scare me with the gun. But he fired and the bullet hit my eye. I touched the eye and realised it was bleeding. That's when I screamed my lungs out," said Qusai.
Qusai's friend called his parents. The boy was taken to a nearby hospital and the family was told that Qusai could not be treated there. It was then that the family thought of bringing him to Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital in Mumbai.
"We reached here late at night. By that time, his eye was swollen and dripping blood. After a series of check ups and CT scans, the doctors here said that it would be impossible to operate until the swelling recedes," Qusai's father said.
"The bullet has penatrated the eye globe and torn the tissues. It is lodged at the apex of the orbit but, luckily, is away from the optic nerve. The swelling is so intense that the boy can only see a bit of light with that eye. We are administering steroids and are going to wait for two days until the swelling recedes, after which we will perform sutureless virectomy (keyhole surgery) on him," Dr S Natrajan of Aditya Jyot Hospital said.
