
The Papua New Guinean was born with a rare congenital eye abnormality, cryptophthalmos, in which both eyelids are fused to his eyeballs, leaving him with limited sight. But surgeons have now managed to restore some of Julian's vision in a series of world-first operations performed at the Sydney Eye Hospital.
There are fewer than 100 reported cases of cryptophthalmos, or "hidden eye", in the world. The genetic disease has not affected any of Julian's family, but there is a chance he may pass it on.
