Worst case scenario: Either claw someone's eyes, or get raped.
Martial arts instructor Chris Caudill is teaching a free self-defense class this afternoon to teach using natural weapons, such as hands, in case of attack.
"It's really simple," Caudill said. "Everyone knows that if you get poked in the eye it hurts. We point out how easy it is to do that."
Caudill has taught his 2.5 hour self-defense class all over Kentucky at schools, churches and college campuses.
He calls his methods a common-sense approach to self-defense.
"It's striking the eyes, throat, groin, knees and feet with weapons you have available - which are your hands, elbows, head, knees and feet," he said. "We do some ugly things, and that's sort of what separates my program."
The class also focuses on situational awareness.
"We teach people how to walk out of Wal-Mart properly," he said. "If you're looking down in your purse and fiddling with your keys and on the phone, you're setting yourself up to be a victim."
Participants will discuss possible scenarios then practice them in the class.
A Winchester police officer will be on hand to help discuss how to stay safe.
"What happens if you go to your house and the door is open, and you question if someone may be in your home?" Caudill asked. "You turn around and walk away, then call the police."
Winchester First is sponsoring the class for the second year. Director Lara Early took the class herself last year.
"It's a great thing for females and females," she said. "I learned a lot of really interesting things - that I hope I never have to use."
Caudill recalls two specific incidents where women called him and said 'If it hadn't been for your program, I would have been raped.'
"That makes it worthwhile for sure," he said.
